The Annunciation

Church of Santa Maria del Giglio, Venice

This Annunciation image is unusual in that there is no architectural separation between the figures, although there is a strong differentiation between the left and right halves. Another surprising feature is Mary's gesture, a more naturalistic form of the palm-out gesture of acceptance that was common before the 13th century.

In the ceiling directly above is a painting of the Father with his arm on a globe of the earth. It is unified with the Annunciation painting by the direction of the Father's gaze, by the dangling feet of the putti, and by the angel's pointing to him, as if speaking the words "the power of the most high will overshadow you" (Luke 1:35).
